New Sim-Plates VFX Workflow: EXRs, Re-Lighting in Comp, and Time Period Specific Vehicles
We’re excited to share a major update to the way Sim-Plates supports post-production workflows, especially for post VFX and green screen workflows.
Our new VFX page is live, and it gives you everything you need to take full control of your comp—Cars are separate from the City, and multiple lighting passes allow you to re-light in the composite.
Whether you’re working on a short film, commercial, or LED volume shoot, this new pipeline will save you time, increase flexibility, and open up creative options.
What’s New?
🎞️ EXR Downloads
You can now download high-resolution EXRs that include denoised Sunlight, Sunset, and Ambient Light passes. This allows you to dial in the look you want—fine-tune shadows, adjust light intensity, and match your scene’s mood perfectly.
If we are hired to do custom work, we can provide whatever render layers and AOVs that you need.
🚗 Car and Environment Layers Separated
We’ve begun rendering vehicles and environments on separate layers. Why does that matter?
It means you can now swap between different time periods—like 1970s muscle cars, 1950s classics, or modern sedans—without re-rendering the entire scene. This dramatically reduces turnaround times and unlocks more flexibility for filmmakers looking for specific historical accuracy or stylization.
💡 Full Lighting Control
Add ambient light to the sunlight pass to create a daylight plate. Do the same with the sunset pass. You can even adjust how harsh or soft the shadows are based on how you composite these layers. It’s all in your hands.
🧰 Render Layers for Custom Work
On the page, you’ll also find examples of the various Render Layers and AOVs available if we’re building custom plates for your production. Whether you’re using Nuke, Assimilate Live FX, or any professional toolset, our assets are designed for quick integration.
Designed for the Way You Work
The workflow shown in the video was built using Assimilate Live FX, but these EXRs are compatible with whatever pipeline you’re using. Our goal is to keep things flexible, modular, and optimized for modern post-production environments.
We’ll continue to expand what’s available—so let us know what formats or AOVs would make your workflow smoother.
