Flying and Water Plates, Backdrops and HDRIs available now at Sim-Plates.com!

Behind the scenes we have been busy!

We’re getting ready to announce the next phase of Sim-Plates, which up until now has focused completely on car process, but we are ready to expand.

We are now essentially a high-end, customizable, stock library for Virtual Production and VFX.

We’ve been developing all new pipelines to tackle flying plates, HDRIs, space plates and digital backdrops. To see it live, visit our Library.

Flying Plates

We’ve created a completely new pipeline for rendering sky plates, something I have been trying to crack on and off for several years. Atmosphere and clouds especially are a difficult thing to render in CG.

Most pipelines either would take way too long to render, or they fall short in the quality department, and makes the clouds not look photo-real (looking at you, game engines).

I think the software and hardware we’ve built on, strikes the best balance between quality and render times, which are important when you have to render thousands of frames for each shot.

Backdrops

Mike Hodgetts has been very busy (re)developing his procedural toolsets so that we can more easily create digital Backdrops, like you’d use for Translights. We can now easily customize a city for day or night, whether we are far away or perhaps from the balcony of a hotel room.

Modern City Backdrop (Work in Progress)

Our Cyber District backdrop was used in a Creamsource + ASSIMILATE shoot recently, once that is released, we'll post more about it.

HDRis

We have been creating our own HDRis for several months and have already created a small library of these for our own use. We've also built custom skies for a shoot recently we did at Trilogy Studios.

We have full control over the lighting, the types of clouds, the cloud coverage, etc, and we render these with and without the Sun Power, which is important if you’re using them as “just” a background (no power so it’s not blown out in SDR workflows) or for lighting CG objects (with the Sun Power).

Elizabeth Pearce is also working on a new website for us, but more on that later.

Custom HDRIs!

Water Plates

We've also made significant progress on water simulation, in both our pipelines. Boat plates anyone?

Space Plates

And last but not least, we've also started creating Space and planetary plates. Nothing too crazy to show yet, but here is a Moon Render, to show some progress.
